With the end of the year quickly approaching, many chapters are gearing up for elections.  In order to better facilitate LD communications, please pass along the name and e-mail of your new chapter president and/or LD chair.  This way, I am able to keep in touch with as many chapters regarding LD events and news in the upcoming year.

Thanks

I've been on the R2 leadership list for a month or so & APO-L ever since the Convention in December or before. I'm currently Historian & Webmaster of the Zeta Sigma Chapter @ the Univ of DE. I am also the APO rep to the National Eagle Scout Association Committee of my BSA council, and thus the council rep, since there is no one else in that position. During these Leadership Weekends, Brothers can experience either one of two programs: the Leadership Institute (LI) or the Chapter Program Workshop (CPW). The LI is an opportunity to experience the new APO Leads programs. Brothers can either choose to participate in an EXPLORE, or a LAUNCH and an ACHIEVE. EXPLORE is a six hour program that "explores" personal leadership development including: qualities of a leader, situational leadership, ethics and morals of leadership, effective problem solving, and conflict resolution. This program gives brothers an opportunity to focus on improving their own leadership skills. NOTE: to attend the EXPLORE at any summer LI, you must have previously been through a LAUNCH. You will not be able to attend a LAUNCH and an EXPLORE in the same LI weekend. If you choose to attend the LAUNCH and the ACHIEVE you will get the basic APO Leads course that is a prerequisite for all other APO Leads courses, and you will learn techniques to strenthen your chapter through team building. LAUNCH is the basic course that is a prerequisite to taking all other APO Leads courses. This three hour workshop discusses various issues such as the difference between leadership and management skills, characteristics of a good leader, an introduction to the Servant Leader model, communication and conflict resolution basics, dealing with change, and the use of SMARTER goals. ACHIEVE is a three hour workshop that focuses on team leadership skills. Brothers participating in this workshop will learn important skills when working in a team. As brothers of Alpha Phi Omega, we are constantly working together in committess and in small groups to accomplish a task. ACHIEVE will help develop skills that will assist brothers in becoming better team players. Skills learned in the achieve include: the importance of following, conflict resolution in teams, the different roles in a team, team diversity, sharing leadership, and team success. If you choose to attend the LI program for the summer Leadership Weekend, you will need to choose between attending an EXPLORE or attending the LAUNCH and the ACHIEVE. You will not be able to take the EXPLORE and the LAUNCH, or the EXPLORE and the ACHIEVE! Once again, if you want to attend the ACHIEVE, you must have, prior to the weekend, been through a LAUNCH. HOWEVER, you may have already been through one or more of the APO Leads programs, or you want to attend this next program before it dies out. In either event, the Leadership Weekend has exactly what you need: the CHAPTER PROGRAM WORKSHOP or CPW. The CPW is a program that focuses on improving Chapter Operations through better chapter management and improved officer leadership. This program will introduce Brothers to the nuts and bolts of what makes a successful chapter tick: palnning, communications, recruiting, retention, brainstorming, delegation, and much, much more. The CPW is an excellent opportunity for newly elected chapter officers to meet and interact with more seasoned chapter officers in order to exchange ideas and improve your chapter. But this doesn't mean that you should not attend if you are not an officer. Brothers who are not an officer can gain valuable insight on improving their entire chapter. Also, one day, you might want to become an officer. The CPW, however, is a dying program. It will soon be retired when the other APO Leads workshops begin to come online. Therefore, THIS MAY BE THE VERY LAST OPPORTUNITY THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO ATTEND A CHAPTER PROGRAM WORKSHOP! Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity. Well, those are the programs, now on to the logistics. No matter which program you choose (the LI or the CPW), the registration is the same: $50. This fee includes your housing and meals as well as the programs themselves. (This fee, however, does not include travel costs.) So where are these Summer Leadership Weekends? Well, there are six weekends planned all over the country. The dates and locations are: June 20-22 Dallas, TX - University of Dallas (LI & presenter training) June 27-29 Chicago (Naperville), IL- North Central College (LI & CPW) July 18-20 Philadelphia Area (Newark, DE) - Univ. of Delaware (LI & CPW) July 18-20 St. Louis, MO- University of Missouri, St. Louis (CPW only) July 25-27 Atlanta, GA Oglethorpe University (LI & CPW) August 1-3 San Francisco Bay Area (Stockton, CA) - University of the Pacific (LI & CPW) Note that the Texas weekend does not have a CPW, and the St. Louis weekend does not have an LI. Otherwise, all dates and locations, as indicated above, include both the LI track and the CPW track. For the alumni out there: there will be APO Leads presenter training at the Texas weekend. Contact Chris Rock or myself for further information if you are interested in being trained. If you have any questions about the summer Leadership Weekends, please do not hesitate to contact me. I hope many, many of my fellow Region II brothers will be able to attend these excellent programs. FORWARDED MESSAGE HERE:

2003 LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE & CHAPTER PROGRAM WORKSHOP

At the 2003 Leadership Institutes (LI), the first three courses of the APO LEADS program will be available.  Additionally, each LI will have a special topic workshop on some aspect of leadership.  LIs will be presented at the same sites and dates as the Chapter Program Workshop (CPW) this summer.  CPWs are excellent opportunities to develop leadership skills and learn about the duties of being a chapter officer.  I encourage all officers or those who wish to become one in the future to attend a CPW.

Here's a list of upcoming CPWs and LIs:

June 20-22    University of Dallas, Dallas TX    LI only
June 27-29    North Central College, Chicago   CPW & LI
July 18-20    University of Delaware, Newark    CPW & LI
July 18-20    University of Missouri, St. Louis   CPW only
July 25-27    Oglethorpe Univ., Atlanta GA       CPW & LI
Aug.1-3    University of the Pacific, Stockton  CPW & LI

You are encouraged to attend any CPW that is convenient to you.  In fact, going to a CPW outside of your region enhances the exchange of ideas and information!

The price of attending is about as good as you can get -- $50.00 no matter which CPW you attend.  That price includes materials, two nights lodging and four meals (three on Saturday, one on Sunday). The actual cost of holding each CPW may be higher than $50.00 per person, but the Fraternity makes up the difference -- because aiding in the growth your leadership abilities is that important!

To register online go to:
www.apo.org and click on the registration button.  It is that easy!  Please share this with your friends and sign up today.  It's just around the corner so don't wait.

If you havn't registered yet, now is the time to do so. I just received notification that many of the sites currently have very low registrations, including the site in Region II, which currently has nobody registered for the LI. The CPWs all over the country currently have very low registration as well. Why am I telling you all of this bad news? Well, it is possible that the either the LI or the CPW (or both) at a particular site could be canceled due to low attendance numbers. What does this mean. This means that those who were thinking about going, and those who already registered might have to choose another site for that program. DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN! How you can help: You can help by registering now for the one of the Leadership Weekends. You can either attend the CPW or the LI at most of the weekends. The CPW is the chapter program workshop, and the LI is the Leadership Institute which focuses on the APO Leads programs. Registration is ONLY $50. This includes the workshops, your lodging, and your meals. YES, THAT'S RIGHT, it is an entire weekend for ONLY $50. For more information, or to register, go to the national leadership development web site at www.leadership.apo.org and click on summer programs. Region II has been very strong in Leadership Devleopment over the past semester. Let's continue our dedication to developing our leadership skills during the summer. It's time to show the rest of the Brotherhood that Region II really is "Second to None", especially when it comes to LD! The longer you wait to sign up, the greater the chance that the weekend you want to go to could be canceled. So, SIGN UP for one of the Summer Leadership Workshops TODAY. in LFS --Chuck Brace Region II LD Chair P.S. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. However, I am currently studying for the PA Bar Exam. Therefore, I may not be able to respond as quickly to messages. Therefore, for questions that need immediate responses, please contact your Section LD Coordinator, Section Chair, or Craig Muckle (Region II Director). One of these, or any number of other staff members in your area, should be able to assist you. _______________________________________________________ Charles Brace, J.D. brace347@hotmail.com www.geocities.com/brace347 Alpha Phi Omega, National Service Fraternity Region II -- Leadership Development Chair Section 89 -- Leadership Development Coordinator Pi Chi Chapter (Duquesne Univerity) -- SPC '97 Phi Chapter (Syracuse University) -- Honorary -- S '02 _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail From pasqua@rpi.edu Mon May 26 18:06:10 2003 Received: from ms-smtp-01.nyroc.rr.com (ms-smtp-01.nyroc.rr.com [24.92.226.148]) by iago.ayw.org (8.11.6/8.11.1) with ESMTP id h4QM69R23942 for ; Mon, 26 May 2003 18:06:09 -0400 (EDT) Received: from Sally (alb-24-194-113-213.nycap.rr.com [24.194.113.213]) by ms-smtp-01.nyroc.rr.com (8.12.5/8.12.2) with SMTP id h4QM9qGm022774 for ; Mon, 26 May 2003 18:09:52 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <01ec01c323d3$86438770$6401a8c0@Sally> From: "Alyssa J. Brothers

Hello out there from my own personal hell (it's called Bar Exam review!).

I just wanted to take a brief moment to remind everyone about the Summer Leadership Weekends.  If you haven't already signed up, please do so.  They are a lot of fun.  You can participate in the APO Leads program (Launch and Achieve, OR Explore) or the Chapter Program Workshop.  Either way, you are getting a great weekend for only $50.  I beleive that you can still register.  Go to www.leadership.apo.org and click on summer workshops for more information.

The next workshop is THIS WEEKEND in the Chicago area.

Questions?  Since these weekends have nothing to do with the statute of frauds or the rule against perpitutities, I'm not the best person to ask right now.  Feel free to contact any one of our friendly staff members, and they will no doubt give you the answer you desire, without any reference res ipsa loquitor or Rule 12(b)(6).

Brothers

It has been brought to my attention that some of you belive that you must take the APO Leads courses in a particular order.  Let me tell you that this is definately NOT true, for all except Launch.

Launch is the prerequisite course for all other APO Leads courses.  After you have taken Launch, you may take any of the remaining courses (Explore, Achieve, and soon Discover and Serve) in ANY ORDER YOU WANT.  You do NOT need to take Explore before you take Achieve.  In fact, there is no requirement that you take any or all of the other courses.  (However, each program is unique and will provide a differnt experience and provide you with different leadership skills.  Also, for those who attend all 5 courses, there may just be some sort of special recognition for you!)

The only thing that you must do is take launch before taking any of the other APO Leads courses.  After that, you are free to choose your own path through the APO Leads courses.

If anybody has any questions regarding the APO Leads program, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I would be happy to answer any questions you have.

Please RSVP soon if you want to attend. This may be of particular interest to those chapters in Section 90, which happens to border Section 62. Thanks, John Sklarsky Section 62 Leadership Development Chair sklarsky@math.duq.edu __________________________________ Dear Fellow Brothers, I have an opportunity that I would like to propose to all interested brothers. The Section 62 Staff wishes to meet the needs of the students by continuing to support the Leadership programs of Alpha Phi Omega. In doing so, we would like to offer the opportunity for you to attend the first Leadership workshop in the APO LEADS program, Launch. The APO LEADS program is Alpha Phi Omegas newest program geared towards developing the future leaders of the fraternity. The experience that you will go through will be one that you can and will take with you your entire life. You not only learn and develop leadership skills solely to use with the fraternity, but you learn leadership skills that can be used absolutely anywhere. Launch is the first workshop, only 3 hours in length, and participation is required in order to attend additional APO LEADS workshops. Are you wondering if you are going to be a good leader for your chapter this year? Do you think that you will be a good leader, but would like some additional information from certified experts? Perhaps you are a new brother and just very willing to begin exemplifying the Leadership principles of Alpha Phi Omega. You don't need to be in the current chapter leadership to attend, these workshops are for EVERYONE! Better yet, we would like to offer this opportunity to participate in Launch prior to the upcoming Regional Conference in Toledo on the Weekend of October 24-26. You will then have the opportunity to attend the Explore and Achieve workshops, the next two workshops in the LEADS program, but you need to attend Launch first. Launch will also be offered at Regionals, but in order to further your growth at the conference with additional workshops we recommend attending Launch prior to the Regional Conference. How low is the cost for you? For only $5, you can attend the Launch program that we will be offering in the Pittsburgh area. This charge will cover printing costs and snacks for the workshop. You will even get a very nice workbook for the workshop that you can take with you afterwards. How do you attend? The workshop is being offered on Saturday, October 11 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. The LAUNCH will begin promptly at 1:00pm. Please email me your Chapter Name, Contact Info, and Who is interested in attending by Friday, October 3. You MUST RSVP for this event!!! Seats are limited and will fill fast. Be a Leader, Be a Friend, Be of Service, Attend Launch, Now. I just wanted to remind everybody who plans on attending our conference (October 17-19) that the Best Western, that has reserved a block of rooms for APO brothers, will stop holding them as of September 24th. That means that if you call and make a reservation after that point, you may not be able to secure a room. So call and make reservations soon! (Make sure you mention you are with APO!) Also, the early/late registration deadline is quickly approaching. Make sure to have your registration form postmarked as of October 1st to get a better price, after October 1st the late fee will be $5.00 on top of the registration cost. I hope to see you all there! And, as always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send me an email. In Leadership, Friendship, Service, and Sectionals, Alyssa J. The festivities will kick off this Friday evening, and the fun will continue throughout the weekend! Many of you still have not registered for the conference. I will need to have your registration packet *and* money in my hand by Tuesday if you will want to attend the banquet. So I recommend overnight mail for everyone who is still looking to attend the banquet. As for the conference itself, I will accept registrations throughout, and even up through Friday evening, until t-shirts and glassware run out. The price to attend just the conference is $20.00. Hope to see you all there! ___________________________ In leadership, friendship, & service, Alyssa J.
